Meal planning has a reputation problem: it sounds like a chore that requires a color-coded spreadsheet, a Pinterest board, and an hour of your Sunday you don't actually have. That reputation is exactly why most people try it once, feel overwhelmed, and quietly go back to figuring out dinner at 6pm every night — which is precisely the pattern that leads to expensive takeout and repeat trips to the grocery store for things you forgot.

The version of meal planning that actually sticks is much smaller than people expect: a simple 7-day, 3-meal grid, filled in loosely, that automatically turns into a shopping list. That's the entire system. No macros, no recipe database, no subscription meal kit.

The Grid Is the Whole Trick

A week has 21 meal slots — 7 days times Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. Most of those slots don't need a full recipe; “eggs and toast” or “leftover pasta” is a perfectly valid entry. The point of filling in the grid isn't to plan gourmet meals, it's to make the decision once, in advance, instead of 21 separate times under time pressure during the week.

For each meal you do want to plan properly, jotting down the ingredients as a simple comma-separated list — “chicken, broccoli, soy sauce, rice” — is enough. You don't need exact quantities at this stage. The goal is capturing what you need to buy, not precise measurements.

From Plan to Grocery List, Automatically

The single biggest time-saver in this whole process is not re-copying ingredients by hand into a separate shopping list.   2. Generate the grocery list once the grid feels done. Scan it for anything obviously missing — pantry staples you're low on rarely show up in a per-meal ingredient list, so add those manually.

  4. Adjust the plan through the week as needed — nobody follows a meal plan exactly, and that's fine. The point is having a default answer for “what's for dinner” rather than no plan at all.

Why the Format Matters

A grocery list that's alphabetized and deduplicated is genuinely faster to shop from than a raw dump of ingredients in meal order. Grocery stores are organized by category, not by which recipe an ingredient belongs to, so having “flour,” “garlic,” and “milk” scattered in the order they appeared across seven days of meals just adds friction. An alphabetized list, while not a perfect match for store layout, is at least consistently ordered and easy to scan top to bottom without missing anything or reading the same section twice.

The whole system works because it removes friction at every step — planning takes minutes, the list generates itself, and shopping from it is faster than shopping without one. That's a low enough bar that it's actually sustainable week after week, which is the only version of meal planning that provides real value.
